New Zealand is a favorite destination for students who decide to strike out and explore the world. New Zealand is seen as a back-drop to some remarkable movies in recent years, and it’s rapidly becoming one of the “in” places to visit. New Zealand not only offers amazing natural beauty, but also is a great place for the adventurous at heart. New Zealand on a Budget
New Zealand is a favorite destination because it’s so accommodating to backpackers and students. For anyone who has to travel on a strict budget, New Zealand may be the ideal destination. Prices for accommodations are much lower than many other countries, so students can stretch their money farther. Of course, prices increase during the peak summer months (December through February), as tourist flock to New Zealand for the balmy weather, but there are still deals to be had for those willing to rough it a little bit. Staying in a Hostel
Staying at a hostel is an easy way to manage a trip to New Zealand. Typical rates for an evening stay at a hostel range from between $11 to $36 per night. There are several hostel organizations across New Zealand that can help you book accommodations at a hostel at a discounted rate. There are close to 500 hostels through New Zealand to choose from, scattered through out both North and South Islands. Attending School in New Zealand
If you plan to attend one of the Universities in New Zealand, you have several accommodation options. There are three primary options for students attending school:
· Residence halls or dormitories – residence halls are located on the major college campuses. Rooms are single occupancy, or you could share a double room and make the acquaintance of a native New Zealander. Who knows, you may even develop a lifetime friendship. Most residence halls also offer meal plans, so you don’t have to worry about making your own meals. · Homestay – there are several programs in place through the universities that match students with a New Zealand family. These unique situations offer students a chance to have an environment similar to staying at home, all experiencing the New Zealand lifestyle up close and personal.
· Apartments/Flats – this is a popular option for students who are used to a little more independence. Most universities offer assistance finding apartments at reduced rates, or at least offer a listing service. You can find a roommate to split the expenses.
Camping
Camping out may be a great idea for those that only plan a short stay and are adventurous. New Zealand has more than 295 parks, most offering some types of accommodations. Simply strap a backpack on and bring a sleeping bag, and you are ready to start the adventure of a lifetime. Camping will give you a connection to the natural beauty that is New Zealand.
Apartments/Flats
This is a popular option with many students. Most institutions help students find a flat. Students choose their own flat mates. Costs range from NZ$ 450 - 525 per month. This includes food + other expenses.
